URMC GI Experts to Host 2nd Annual Advanced Endoscopy Nurses Course

Feb. 18, 2016

Gastroenterology experts at the University of Rochester Medical Center will host the 2nd annual Advanced Endoscopy Nurses Course April 22 and 23, 2016, at the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Based in the Class of ’62 Auditorium, participants will observe and discuss procedures performed at UR Medicine’s Center for Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy, located in Strong Memorial Hospital’s ambulatory care facility.

The only course of its kind in the country, it draws endoscopy nurses and allied GI health professionals from the Western, Central and the Capital districts of New York, as well as Pennsylvania and other states in the northeast and mid-Atlantic.

The Advanced Endoscopy Nursing Course is designed to give gastroenterology nurses, technicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants an opportunity to learn about new technology and advanced techniques in endoscopy. In addition to lectures, participants will observe live interventional endoscopy procedures and take part in a hands-on workshop aimed at improving their endoscopy knowledge and skills. The program will focus on general and advanced endoscopic therapies for benign and malignant disorders of the GI tract, liver, pancreas and biliary system.

The success of last year’s inaugural course prompted the program’s growth into a two-day event aimed at a broader audience. Participants in the first course offered rave reviews, including one participant who said: “I’ve been an endoscopy nurse for 23 years and this is the best course I have ever attended.”

URMC experts will lead the teaching, joined by guest faculty from the University of Virginia Health System, Geisinger Health System, Temple University and Henry Ford Health System.  The course is directed by Gastroenterology Division Chief Dr. Vivek Kaul, endoscopic experts Drs. Shivangi Kothari, Truptesh Kothari and Asad Ullah, and Kristine Jaeger, RN, GI assistant nurse manager.
