EIOH Researchers Ranked Highly by ScholarGPS
Several Eastman Institute for Oral Health scientists have been recognized for their research by Scholar GPS, which uses sophisticated analysis and statistical methods to rank scholars, based on various metrics related to their number of publications and times their publications were cited.

Dr. Eli Eliav’s main area of research is orofacial pain, including quantitative sensory testing, neuropathic pain, pain modulation and the role of inflammation in neuropathic pain. He ranks in the top 0.3% of Dentistry scholars overall, as well as in his specialties of neuropathic pain, peripheral neuropathy, and nerve injury.
The focus of Dr. Jack Caton’s (Perio '73, MS '73) research is periodontal wound healing, including animal models, diagnosis, and human clinical trials. He ranks in the top 0.4% of Dentistry scholars both overall and within the past 5 years, particularly for his work involving doxycycline.
Dr. Thomas Diekwisch’s research is focused on the genetics and proteins involved in forming and maintaining dental tissues, as well as dental evolution. He is ranked in the top 0.6% of Dentistry and 0.9% of Periodontics scholars.
Dr. Sharon Elad’s research centers on oral complications of cancer treatment, such as mucositis, osteonecrosis of the jaw, and chronic graft-versus-host disease, as well as dental management of these patients. She ranks in the top 0.6% of Dentistry and 0.75% of Oral Health scholars within the past 5 years, particularly in the specialties of cancer and symptomatic treatment. In fact, her work is ranked within the top 0.02% of the symptomatic treatment specialty within the past 5 years.
Dr. Emile Rossouw’s research includes clinical orthodontics, biomaterials, jaw growth and long-term stability. He is in the top 0.6% of Dentistry and Orthodontics scholars.
Prosthodontics and implant dentistry are the main research focus for Dr. Carlo Ercoli (MBA '19, Perio '12, GenDen '98, OFP '97, Prostho '96), particularly the procedures, designs, and materials involved. He is ranked in the top 0.9% of Dentistry scholars within the past 5 years.
Dr. Dorota Kopycka’s (MPH '03, GenDen '02) research includes oral disease distribution and control, the study of cavities and their causes, and teledentistry. She ranks within the top 0.9% of Dentistry scholars within the past 5 years, particularly in the early childhood specialty.
Dr. Junad Khan (GenDen ’20) is actively engaged in both clinical and basic science research, including neuropathic pain, pain modulation, drug development, pharmacotherapy, acute and chronic orofacial pain. He is ranked within the top 1% of Dentistry scholars within the past 5 years, particularly for his work on inflammatory cytokines.
Dr. Fawad Javed’s (GPR ‘18, GenDen ’17) research is mainly focused on oral health management in patients with systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and pre-diabetes. He is ranked in the top 0.02% of Dentistry and Oral Health scholars within the past 5 years, particularly for his recent work in chronic periodontitis. He also ranks in the top 0.3% of Dentistry and 0.5% of Oral Health scholars overall, and in multiple specialties including dental implants, systemic disease, and photodynamic therapy.
