Joseph to Head Urology Department
Jean Joseph, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.S., a pioneer in the field of robotic surgery, will become the next chair of the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) Department of Urology. Joseph will assume the position effective January 1, 2018.

Jean is also a passionate advocate for advancing medical education and expanding basic and clinical research programs in urological diseases and I look forward to working with him and the faculty to develop and grow these programs.”

Joseph will be appointed as the Winfield W. Scott Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology at URMC. He will as serve as chief of Urology at Strong Memorial and Highland Hospitals. His appointment is subject to the approval of the respective hospital boards and the University of Rochester Board of Trustees.
Joseph currently serves as professor of Urology and Oncology. He is the director of the Section of Urologic Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery, and director of the Center for Robotic Surgery and Innovation. He also directs the fellowship in endourology, laparoscopy, and robotic surgery.
Joseph received his undergraduate degree in biology from Boston University and his medical degree and residency training at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He conducted his fellowship training at the University College London in reconstructive urologic surgery and completed a master class in laparoscopic prostatectomy at the Institute Mutualiste Montsouris in Paris, France.
In 2001, Joseph was one of a handful of surgeons in the U.S. to first begin performing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Since then, he has performed nearly 5,000 robotic procedures and is frequently called upon train other physicians in robotic techniques and performs live surgical demonstrations at national and international symposiums.
Joseph has served in a number of leadership positions in the Society of Urologic Robotic Surgery, the Endourological Society, and the American Urological Association. He has authored numerous medical journal articles on topics related to robotic and minimally invasive surgery. He also serves as editor for Doctor's Advice a patient-oriented magazine focused on preventative health.
The URMC Department of Urology consists of 21 faculty providing the region's most advanced urologic care for adult and pediatric patients and is active in several research areas including investigating new ways to diagnose and treat prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers, and developing advanced simulations to improve surgical outcomes and train surgeons.
Joseph will take over for Edward Messing, M.D., F.A.C.S., who has led the Urology Department since 1995. Messing is a renowned expert in the detection, prevention, and treatment of genitourinary cancers. Messing will remain on the Department’s faculty.

In announcing the appointment, Taubman thanked the recruitment committee that evaluated and interviewed candidates for the position, which was led by led by Jeffrey Lyness, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Michael Rotondo, M.D., CEO of UR Medical Faculty Group, and included Elizabeth Guancial, M.D., Steven Goldstein, Diane Hartmann, M.D., Marc Lande, M.D., M.P.H., Lynne Maquat, Ph.D., Shawn Newlands, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., Mark Orloff, M.D., Michael Stapleton, and Hong Zhang, M.D., Ph.D.
