Jin Xiao's Leadership Recognized Nationally
Jin Xiao, DDS, Eastman Institute for Oral Health associate professor, was selected for the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM), the prestigious program in North America that prepares women for senior leadership roles in schools of medicine, dentistry, public health and pharmacy.
Dedicated to developing the professional and personal skills required to lead and manage in today’s complex health care environment, the program offers special attention to the unique challenges women in leadership face. It is designed for those at the associate or full professor level who demonstrate the greatest potential for assuming executive leadership positions at academic health centers within the next five years.
Dr. Xiao (GenDen ’13, GPR ’14), a perinatal oral health expert, is passionate about bridging basic science and translational research with clinical care to help children in underserved communities. Her innovative research initiatives explore prevention, early detection and treatment of severe tooth decay that promotes the wellbeing of women and children. Her projects include collaboration with experts across disciplines and have led to multi-million dollar support from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of National Institutes of Health.
The 2024-2025 class represents the largest ever, with 98 ELAM fellows. The program’s 1500 alumnae serve in leadership positions at 300 academic health centers around the world. “The need for the highest quality leaders in academic healthcare has never been greater and we are doing everything we can to help meet that need by providing outstanding and innovative leadership training for women,” said Nancy D. Spector, MD, executive director of ELAM.
“Dr. Xiao is one of many strong leaders at Eastman Institute for Oral Health who have applied innovative and strategic thinking to advance research, education and clinical care,” said Eli Eliav, DMD, PhD, EIOH director and professor. “The ELAM program will undoubtedly help promote her skills and leadership to a new level.”
Additionally, in recognition of her accomplishments and contributions to translational science and research, Dr. Xiao was selected for the University’s Clinical & Translational Science Institute’s Robert G. Holloway CTSI KL2 Alumni Lectureship for 2024-25. Dr. Xiao will provide the keynote address for the University’s CTSI Translational Research Day in October and participate in a panel discussion with current and incoming KL2 scholars next year.
