Donors Get First Look Inside New Golisano Children’s Hospital

 About 150 generous individuals who have supported building UR Medicine’s new Golisano Children’s Hospital will get a first look inside the new building under construction Thursday evening at an event in their honor.

When completed next summer, the new hospital will be eight floors, approximately 245,000 square feet and will cost about $145 million. Thanks to community’s generosity and the support of the University of Rochester Medical Center, the building is within $14 million of being full funded.

 

The new hospital has been designed and built entirely around the needs of children and their families. In fact, families participated in the design process and influenced every decision along the way. The building features 52 private medical/surgical rooms and 44 private Neonatal Intensive Care Unit rooms – with at least 16 more beds in the NICU’s current space, which will be renovated. It will also include dedicated Pediatric Imaging with a PET-MRI — one of only a few nationwide — a two-story Playdeck, comfortable family lounges, a dedicated pediatric lobby, Ronald McDonald House hospitality lounge, drop-in child care for siblings, patient-family library and two healing gardens.

As donors tour the new space and sign the wall where they will ultimately be recognized for their support, they will see construction on each floor coming closer to completion. The interior of the new hospital, including graphic elements, decor, art and architectural features, will showcase the many beautiful landscapes of upstate New York. Each floor will have a different theme, such as waterways, meadows, gardens and parks, with an icon to represent it. The third/NICU floor is already starting to get some paint on the walls and its “Meadow” theme will start taking shape. On the seventh floor, the green paint and colorful tiles of the “Park” theme are getting applied.

 

Donors will also be able to see some of the architectural elements coming to life. In the new lobby, they will be able to see the interactive wall or play pod in its skeletal studs. The Playdeck is beginning to look a lot more like the architects’ renderings, and the view of the rolling hills leading to the Finger Lakes is better than imagined. And the staircase leading from Crittenden Boulevard through the atrium may still be a bit dusty, but its grandiosity is already evident.
