Childbearing After Recovery Program Helps Patients Preserve Fertility During Treatment

Join the Strong Fertility Center for the sixth annual CARE Fundraising Event and Silent Auction to benefit cancer survivors 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 13, at La Luna Banquet Center, 60 Browns Race, Rochester. The fundraiser benefits cancer survivors who seek fertility preservation services from the center’s Childbearing After Recovery (CARE) program.

More than 140,000 young people in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer every year. Often, the very treatments that are successful in eliminating their cancer can have devastating effects on their fertility. CARE helps couples proactively plan when faced with a cancer diagnosis, so they may take steps prior to cancer treatment to help preserve fertility for pregnancy following recovery.

However, the cost of fertility preservation can be a major barrier for those who seek care as it is often not covered by health insurance. To support patients, Strong Fertility Center sponsors fundraising events that offset much of the cost to patients.

Wendy Vitek, M.D.

“Over the past five years, we have been able to provide fertility preservation procedures to several young women with cancer, giving them continued hope for a better future—including the ability to have a family—after surviving cancer,” said Fertility Specialist Wendy Vitek, M. D., who oversees the fertility preservation program. “In addition, we have provided consultation and support to dozens more who wished to discuss their fertility concerns and options surrounding their disease and planned treatments.”

The Fundraising Event and Silent Auction is open to the public. Tickets are $40 and include wine, beer, hors d’oeuvres and dessert. Sponsorships are also available. For information or reservations, call (585) 487-3375.
