A 72-year-old tradition in medical education filled the Class of ’62 Auditorium at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry with cheers and tears, as aspiring medical doctors learned where they will train as residents during the annual Match Day ceremony. At noon on Friday, March 15, medical students from across the country opened envelopes with the name of the institution they matched with inside.

“Every physician remembers their match day as it sets the course for the next phase of their career,” said David R. Lambert, MD, senior associate dean for medical school education at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. “It is the culmination of years of work.”

This pivotal moment in students’ academic careers begins during the fourth year of medical school when students apply and interview at institutions where they are interested in training. Following those interviews, both the student and programs separately submit their preference lists in ranking order. The National Residency Match Program runs the ranking and selection process and considers the preferences of students and the programs. Students who participated in the early matches in urology and ophthalmology were already notified of their training sites.
“We are fortunate to again have many of our graduates staying with us to train,” Lambert said, “and are equally as proud of the members of the Class of 2024 who will be geographically scattered across the U.S., bringing with them what they have learned at the University of Rochester.”

From Rochester's class of 2024, 30 students will stay at the University of Rochester Medical Center for their residency training (the same as last year) and the others will go elsewhere. The majority are staying in New York state (42) followed next by Pennsylvania (7), then California (5), and the rest of the 2024 graduates will be in 26 other states including the District of Columbia. Overall, UR SMD students pursuing residency training were placed in 23 different specialties, with the largest concentrations in Internal Medicine (15), Psychiatry (10), Family Medicine (8) and Pediatrics (7).
There are 183 residents who matched at URMC. They will begin their training in Rochester this summer.
