Leader in Electrocardiology Funds New Endowed Professorship
Wojciech Zareba, M.D., Ph.D. has been named the inaugural David Mortara Endowed Professor in Cardiology, to advance the research of technology focused on cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure.
“For the last few decades,” said Zareba, “while attending meetings of scientific organizations, I have often crossed paths with David, and this led us to long-term collaborations and friendship. We have benefited from each other’s work in this field, and David’s generosity led to the establishment of this fund. It is an honor to be the first person to hold this professorship.”
Zareba earned his M.D. and Ph.D. at the Medical University of Lodz, in Poland. He came to URMC in 1991 for his postdoctoral fellow heart research follow-up program. He has been the principal investigator on multiple NIH and corporate grants, receiving over $35 million in funding over the years, and has authored over 700 publications.
David Mortara, Ph.D. has contributed significantly to technology and innovation over the past 50 years. He founded Mortara Instrument, Inc., a manufacturer of non-invasive cardiology products and ECG technology. He is a professor of Physiology at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing, and professor of Cardiology at UCSF School of Medicine.
Chair of Medicine, Ruth O’Regan, M.D., said “Dr. Zareba has made the University of Rochester his academic home and has mentored countless numbers of trainees and junior faculty over the past two decades. He is known for supporting others as they pursue their academic careers, including assisting and advising during grant preparation, and encouragement during those times when ideas, grants, papers, or the path looks bleak.”
