8th Annual ‘Strollin’ for the Colon’ to Benefit Cancer Education, Research
UR Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology will sponsor the 8th annual Strollin' for the Colon 5K Walk/Run beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Geneseo’s Village Park, at the corner of Main Street and Route 20A in Geneseo. Strollin’ for the Colon is a non-profit organization that promotes awareness of the life-saving benefits of screening and raises funds for research and education.
Colon cancer—the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.—is preventable if detected at an early stage.
“Awareness of screening for this preventable disease is urgently needed in our region,” said 5K chair Tina Cottone, a gastroenterology nurse at UR Medicine’s Strong Memorial Hospital. “This event will help support colon cancer research at the Wilmot Cancer Institute, as well as cancer awareness programs through UR Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and the Cancer Services Program of the Finger Lakes Region.
Registration for the 5K is $25 per person in advance, $30 the day of the race, and includes chip timing and snacks before and after the race. Online registration is open until May 9. Those who register by May 4 will get a free tee shirt. Race-day registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Entrants are invited to collect and submit additional donations.
The event will also feature a fun run for kids that will follow the 5K, a giant inflatable colon display, gastroenterology specialists on hand to provide information and answer questions, food available to purchase, music and prizes.
“We hold this event in memory of all those we have lost to colon cancer, and in honor of those who are survivors,” said Cottone. “We know first-hand that screening can save lives and so we encourage everyone to spread the word and to heed their doctor’s advice and get screened regularly.”
